You look up and a billboard catches your eye. It’s gorgeous. Definitely a multi-million dollar campaign.
And then all of a sudden, the tag-line pops up, and it’s MISSPELLED.
Can you imagine going to all of that length, just to look silly in the end? Well, naturally this didn’t happen in Times Square … but it does happen on the web. And for the average business, the web IS your Times Square.
Sure a typo is just a typo. Yeah, I know... we’re all human and make mistakes once in while. But it’s bigger than that. It’s the lack of attention to detail.
And I wish I could say that this trait is uncommon. It seems as though there are more and more ways that the ‘web proficient’ are cutting corners and making sloppy sidesteps
rather than give their client the solution that best fits their needs. Plus, they think that you won’t know. But after reading this article … you will!
So, you may be asking yourself … well, how do I know the difference?
Well, ultimately, you are striving for clean, concise coding that works cross-platform and cross-browser. This is not only for quick loading for your site’s visitors but also for organizational and search engine friendliness as well.
Do this, go to your view menu at the top of your browser. Click view source.
This may be uncomfortable for some … but it’s okay, you won’t break anything.
Now, the code if you notice ... is clean, organized, indented and concise. That’s good. Take this experiment with you to other sites on the web, perhaps even including your own and see how much “gobble-dee-gook” you see. It would suffice to say that you will scroll for awhile and probably note a degradation of detail.
Bringing this back, the lack of detail in the code reflects not only a lazy and haphazard coder … but more importantly, someone that may not be standards compliant and not up to date with the web’s most versatile and cutting edge options. And that’s doing you a huge disservice.
So, in summary … if you are going to do something, do it right. Spell it right. Code it right. Build it right. EVERYTIME.
